Join us for a presentation by Kimi Hill, granddaughter of Haruko and Chiura Obata.
In Chiura Obata: An American Modern ShiPu Wang writes: "Chiura Obata (1885-1975) was one of the most significant Japanese American artists working on the West Coast in the last century....His faith in the power of art, his devotion to preserving the myriad grandeur of what he called "Great Nature," and his compelling personal story as an immigrant and an American are all as relevant to our contemporary moment as ever."
Professor Obata was a faculty member of the Art Department at Cal from 1932 to 1954, interrupted by incarceration during WWII.
Haruko Obata, Chiura Obata's wife and ikebana sensei was an artist in her own right, being one of the first ikebana teachers in the United States.
