Rapid growth underpinned by a thriving technology sector and cultural scene has led to Austin’s characterization as a “Superstar” city. However, Austin’s challenges with housing inequity and affordability reflect the same challenges faced by regions such as the San Francisco Bay Area. This talk explores the consequences of decades of land use policy decisions and the latest efforts to address the housing situation. John Chen (Stanford BS ’06, MS ’07) first moved to Austin to attend law school at UT and began his career as an M&A and corporate attorney in New York and Hong Kong at Davis Polk before moving to San Francisco to represent clients in the tech startup and renewable energy space. John returned to Austin to pursue a longstanding interest in real estate development and investment.
