2022 Prytanean Homecoming Lecture

Professor G. Cristina Mora, Associate Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of the Institute of Governmental Studies will be presenting a lecture on Latinos and the Future of the US Racial Landscape as the Prytanean Homecoming Lecture. The event will be both on campus and streamed virtually, Friday, 09/23/22, from 12pm-1pm.

Latinos and the Future of the US Racial Landscape

In the coming decade, Latinx communities are poised to make up just over 20 percent of the nation’s population. However, lingering questions about inequality, identity, and the role that Latinos play in visions of racial justice and multiracial democracy remain. This talk examines these issues, showing how the construction of race and ethnicity in America has historically served as a mechanism for reinforcing Latinx inequality and institutionalized racism more broadly. Drawing on census, public opinion, and polling data, this work reveals how critical Latinx issues are for understanding the racial future of the nation.
